From COVID Hobby to NYFW, How I Took My Handmade Jewelry to the Big Stage

How I Turned My Love for Flower Preservation into a Thriving Business (and How You Can Too!) 🌸✨

Hey there! I’m Marika Therrien, and I have a story I think every craft lover, creator, and aspiring entrepreneur should hear. It's a journey that began with a simple passion for preserving flowers and evolved into something so much more. In the height of the pandemic, when everything seemed chaotic and uncertain, I found peace in a craft I had no idea would completely transform my life. And today, I’m not only living my dream as a flower preservation artist, but I’m also helping other women turn their creative hobbies into full-time businesses.

You see, a few years ago, I was just like you — an artist who loved creating beautiful things, but unsure if it was enough to turn it into a business. But I took a leap of faith, and my life has completely changed since then.

I’m here to share my story with you because I know, deep down, there’s something inside you — that same spark — that’s telling you: You can do this. If you’ve been dreaming of turning your craft into a business, now is the time. You can make it happen. Trust me, I’ve done it, and you can too.

How I Found My Ikigai in the Midst of Chaos 🌱

In the early days of the pandemic, the world was a mess. My job was uncertain, the future felt unpredictable, and my mental health was taking a hit. But in the middle of all that noise, I rediscovered my love for flower preservation. I had always been drawn to the beauty of nature, and I loved the idea of capturing its delicate beauty in something permanent. As a kid I would press wildflowers with my mom and laminate them into bookmarks. I guess that spilled over into adulthood, where I started experimenting with resin jewelry, preserving flowers in necklaces, earrings, and hairpins — and suddenly, something clicked.

Flower preservation gave me peace. It was a meditative process that allowed me to focus, slow down, and create something beautiful in a world that felt out of control. It was my escape, my therapy, and my joy all wrapped into one.

This is where the concept of Ikigai — the Japanese philosophy of living with purpose — came into play. Ikigai is about finding that sweet spot where your passion, mission, profession, and vocation all align. For me, it was combining my love for crafting, the joy I found in preserving flowers, and my desire to bring beauty into the world. It became my purpose.

What started as a hobby turned into a side hustle, and soon, I realized that this was my calling — my way to live a life filled with purpose and creativity. And here’s the best part: You can do this too. You don’t have to have everything figured out; you just need to start, take the leap, and trust that the pieces will fall into place.

From Full-Time Job to Full-Time Entrepreneur 🌟

Fast forward to today — I’ve built my business from scratch and created a lifestyle where I am in control of my time, my creative process, and my future. I quit my full-time job selling solar and embraced flower preservation art as a full-time career. I never imagined it would lead me to where I am now: showcasing my handmade collections of preserved flower jewelry at New York Fashion Week in 2024 and 2025. And yes, I’m still pinching myself! But here’s the thing — it didn’t happen overnight. There were challenges, setbacks, and moments when I doubted myself. But I kept pushing forward, learning, and growing. Every setback became a lesson, and every little victory built my confidence. The beauty of turning your passion into a business is that you’re constantly evolving, and each step forward gets you closer to your ultimate goal.

If you’re sitting there thinking, I have this craft, but I’m not sure it could become a business — trust me, it absolutely can. You just need to take that first step.

Why You Should Take the Leap 💪
